Music

At Crossroads music is offered to every student in the school from Pre-K through 8 th grade:

  • For Pre-K and K it is enrichment of the mind by the use of the voice and Music listening skills.
  • Grades 1 & 2- reading music and singing, body rhythmic exercises to music for coordination. Music taught is directly from our forefathers music that they sang as work songs, patriotic songs and fun songs.
  • Grade 3- the first introduction to a musical instrument through the recorder.  Counting clapping, singing and elements of music.
  • Grade 4- Students have the opportunity to learn and play a real band instrument. They get to choose from:  Flute, Clarinet, Saxophone, Trumpet, Trombone and Percussion.
  • Grades 5 through 8- Continuation of instrumental music with singing as an extracurricular activity for our Spring Musical.

 

In the area of education Mr. Rubino’s career has spanned from a start-up high school music program to winning a first national marching band competition (Bands of America, 1976 and 1978); to cultural music exchanges exposing over 800 students to diverse cultures including China, Soviet Union, Japan, Viet Nam, Cambodia, Singapore, and Malaysia; to elementary music education for the Morgan Hill Unified School District.  As director of the Live Oak Emerald Regime Band, Morgan Hill, CA (1971-1998), his tenure included two MBA Grand National championships, over 8 years as California State Champion and numerous awards for concert, symphonic and jazz band. Mr. Rubino was recently inducted into the Bands of America Hall of Fame in 2011.

As an adjudicator he is an active judge for DCI (Drum Corps International) and holds the position of Drum Corps International Pacific judges’ coordinator.  He also travels throughout the United States and Japan as an independent judge for BOA, MCBA (Michigan),CBM (Colorado), ISSMA(Indiana), SCBA (south Carolina) marching band competitions.

As a composer and arranger he has prepared more 100 arrangements and original compositions.

He has designed and implemented an elementary music program that has proven to be highly successful in teaching 4th – 6th grade students the basic elements of music. These components are then combined with original and existing scores and lyrics to strengthen musical knowledge/performance, and grade level history lessons utilizing music (choral) as the medium.  Currently every elementary student in the Morgan Hill Unified School District is exposed to music through his efforts.
